Brow Lamination VS Brow Tint: What is the Difference?

One of the most common questions my brow clients ask me is, “What do you think my brows need?” Which is almost always immediately followed up with, “What is the difference between an eyebrow lamination and an eyebrow tint?”

Have you asked this before? Are you curious yourself? Here is a simple breakdown so you can pick the right service for your beauty goals. Or decide to get both!

A brow refresh is welcome for everyone, but which service suits you best? The two most popular services to book for fuller and polished brows are Brow Lamination and Brow Tinting.  While often booked together, the two services accomplish different beauty goals and should not be thought of as the same thing. Here is everything you need to know about Brow Lamination and Brow Tinting and which service is right for you.

The Services:

Brow Tint: Performed to add color and darkness to define brow hair and the skin underneath with semi-permanent dye. This allows your brows to appear fuller, thicker, and more prominent.

  • How long it lasts: 3 - 6 Weeks

  • Typical Service Time: 15 - 30 Minutes

  • Maintenance: Re-tint every 3 - 6 Weeks

Brow Lamination: Performed to change shape and direction of brow hair by using a chemical process to break down the structure of the hair to allow it to set brow hairs into a desired position. The end result is a groomed appearance that locks into your ideal style and only requires minor brushing during your day-to-day routine to see your ideal look.

  • How long it lasts: 4-8 Weeks

  • Typical Service Time: 45 - 60 Minutes

  • Maintenance: Re-laminate every 6-8 weeks (to allow all prior hair to shed)

Should You Get a Brow Tint?

Those with light and or gray brow hair who wish they were darker and with more definition should schedule a brow tint.  Love your brow shape but want an even color throughout? A brow tint is perfect for you!

If you have sparse, thin brows with gaps or extra fine hair, a brow tint will also help establish more defined eyebrows.

Should You Get a Brow Lamination?

Brow laminations are designed for those with unruly brows (hairs that grow sideways, straight out, downwards, and stubborn to style) and asymmetrical brows (uneven, unmatched eyebrows)

If you struggle with brow maintenance and want your brow hair to lay flat while maintaining a brushed-up look with more shape and texture, a brow lamination is the service for you.

If your brow needs fit both these descriptions, you are a candidate for both! These services are typically booked together. If you want to achieve fully defined and dark brows and want to minimize your brow maintenance on a day-to-day basis, booking both a brow tint and brow lamination together is right for you!

Trust me, book both. Everyone deserves a brow refresh.

What Can You Expect During Your Appointment?

Brow Tint:

  • Proper cleansing of the brows to remove oils, debris, and to ensure a clean workplace

  • Shade matching brows to ensure the best color match for your tint and natural hair (typically a softer color than the hair root)

  • The tint is applied and allowed to process (a few minutes depending on brow goals)

  • Tint is removed and brows are cleaned up and styled

Brow Lamination:

  • Proper cleansing of the brows to remove oils, debris, and to ensure a clean workplace

  • Lifting solution is applied to begin the brow processing

  • Hairs are brushed into desired shape

  • Setting solution is applied to lock in final shape

  • Brows are cleaned, shaped. (This would be when brows are tinted)

  • Hydration serum is applied

Aftercare:

For both services

  • Keep brows dry for 24 - 48 hours

  • Avoid scrubbing the brows, rubbing the eye area and sleeping face down.

  • Avoid harsh cleansers and heavy exfoliants, retinoids, and oils around the brows for up to 48 hours.

  • Use a brow serum or conditioner to nourish the brow hairs and keep them healthy

If you are getting either service (or both) for an event or a trip, it is advised to book 2 - 3 days before the event so brows look fresh but are allowed to settle into your skin

FAQs:

  • Can I get both services done on the same day?

    • Yes! Usually a Brow Tint follows a Brow Lamination to bring color back into the brow after the chemical process breaks the protein in the hair down.

  • Will a brow lamination damage my brows?

    • When done properly, it does not damage your brows. Brows naturally shed and regrow, As long as brows are not getting over-process or done too-frequently and nourished, they will be in good standing. Make sure to book with a professional!

  • Which service lasts longer?

    • A brow lamination lasts a couple of weeks longer than a brow tint. You can refresh your brow with a tint before your lamination is up.
