What is Dermaplaning and is It For You?

Beautiful skin is not about perfection. It’s about creating a nourished, radiant skin barrier and finding a routine that helps you achieve and maintain it.

A crucial skincare step? The removal of dead skin is key to ensure a brighter look, better product absorption, and an instant glow.

One of the most common methods to achieve this is dermaplaning.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a deep exfoliation performed with a sterile surgical scalpel in order to reveal the brighter, softer skin that’s underneath the dead layer of skin.

This noninvasive treatment gently removes the top layer of dead skin cells and vellus hair (peach fuzz) from the face, front of the neck, cheeks, and forehead.

Once the peach fuzz and dead skin is removed, skincare products are able to penetrate deeper into your skin. Your skin goals will now be significantly more targeted, and you will see quicker results from your routine.

Dermaplaning addresses skin concerns, acne scars, textured skin, and fine lines that will appear smoother over routine appointments resulting in a rejuvenated complexion.

The best part about dermaplaning? There’s no downtime after your service! Feel free to carry on about your day, with SPF!

How Often Should I Get a Dermaplane?

A high quality addition to your skincare routine, a dermaplane should be scheduled every 3-4 weeks. We want to regularly tackle any buildup of dead skin cells before it can get trapped into your pores resulting in breakouts and congested skin.

Routine dermaplaning will do wonders to help maintain dewy glass skin.

Am I A Candidate for Dermaplaning?

Everyone is a candidate for dermaplaning!

However, if you are experiencing inflamed breakouts, open lesions, taking accutane or prescription retinoids, it is best to wait until you are cleared by your dermatologist to make an appointment.

Going over active breakouts can spread bacteria around the face and further irritate the skin.

What Can I Expect?

A typical service lasts between 30-45 minutes.

The appointment will consist of your esthetician:

  1. Cleansing your skin.

  2. Applying gliding oil to ensure smoother hair removal.

  3. Dermaplaning!

  4. Moisturizing and protecting the skin.

Make sure to ask your esthetician to see how much hair is removed when finished!

Debunking Myths

Here are some common misconceptions regarding dermaplaning:

“Hair grows back thicker!”

Removing the vellus hair does not make it grow back thicker or darker. Hair will regrow to its normal growth cycle every 3-4 weeks. Dermaplaning has no effect on this cycle.

“Dermaplaning can be done at home!”

It is best to get a dermaplane done by a professional rather than using the blades from your local drugstore. Professional blades are a higher quality and go much deeper in the skin rather than the surface level. Plus when involving sharp blades close to your face, it’s best to go to the experts!

Doing it yourself can cause micro-nicks in the skin, and hair may not be completely removed / removed unevenly.

“Dermaplaning is painful!”

Dermaplaning is a gentle, relaxing treatment. My clients have said it feels like a light brushing or feathering motion across their skin.

“Dermaplaning causes breakouts!”

The opposite! Dermaplaning involves removing dead skin cells which are the cause of breakouts.

Following an appointment, your skin may overproduce sebum (oil) which can cause minor purging that goes away after a few days. After this everything clears up and your skin becomes radiant as ever!

Have you tried dermaplaning yet? It may be the treatment you’re missing to take the next step on your skincare journey.

Still have questions? I’d love to help you decide if this is the right treatment for you.
